Description
A Southbend single-deck infrared broiler that reaches broiling heat in 90 seconds, for steakhouse-grade searing.
The Southbend 170 is a single-deck infrared broiler for steakhouses, hotels and high-volume grills. Infrared burners deliver 104,000 BTU on natural gas or propane and reach broiling heat in about 90 seconds, with no waiting between loads. A 120V blower feeds filtered primary air, so it plugs into a standard outlet as well as the gas line. The deck has a 24-1/2" x 28" roll-out grid with five height positions; the front 3" stays cooler for holding finished food.

Infrared speed
Infrared burners reach broiling heat in about 90 seconds and recover between loads, so there is no waiting at the pass.
Adjustable roll-out grids
The 24-1/2" x 28" roll-out grid rolls out 17-1/4" and sets at five heights. The front 3" gets less heat for holding.
Filtered air
A blower pushes fresh air through a washable 9-1/2" x 19-1/2" metal mesh filter so smoke and vapor do not slow broiling.

Questions buyers ask
Does it need electricity?
Yes, a little. The blower runs on 120V and draws 1.0 A through a 7-foot cord with a grounded plug. The burners run on gas.
Natural gas or propane?
Both are rated 104,000 BTU. The gas type is set at the factory; tell us yours when ordering. Minimum supply pressure is 7" W.C. natural gas, 11" W.C. propane.
How fast does it heat up?
About 90 seconds, per Southbend, with no waiting between loads.
How close can it go to a wall?
10" at the sides and 6" at the rear from combustible construction per the spec sheet (the older manual lists 6"), 0" from noncombustible. Install it under a vented hood and leave room in front to roll out the grids.
Can it go on casters?
Yes. Casters are an option; if you use a flexible gas hose, add the cable restraint kit so the hose is not strained.
What does the warranty cover?
Southbend covers defects in parts and labor for 1 year from purchase, up to 18 months from the factory sale, serviced by a Southbend Authorized Service Agency. Ceramic burner tiles, spark igniters and similar wear parts are limited to 90 days, and damage from improper installation or misuse is not covered.
