A Southbend double-deck radiant broiler with four Schwank burners, built for nonstop broiling.
The Southbend 234R is a double-deck radiant broiler for steakhouses, hotels and high-volume grills. Four Schwank radiant burners with ceramic tile catalysts put out 220,000 BTU on natural gas (180,000 on propane) across two decks. It needs no electricity: constant-burning pilots light the burners. Each deck has a 24-1/2" x 28" roll-out grid with four height positions; the front 3" stays cooler for holding finished food.

Schwank radiant burners
Four radiant burners with ceramic tile catalysts, two per deck with twin controls, built to handle extreme heat.
Adjustable roll-out grids
The 24-1/2" x 28" roll-out grid rolls out 17-1/4" and sets at four heights with a spring-balanced lever. The front 3" gets less heat for holding.

Built by Southbend in Fuquay-Varina, NC, CSA design certified and NSF, with a 1-year parts and labor warranty.
Delivery and setup
- Ships by freight carrier. See our shipping policy for delivery details, and call us for the current lead time.
- Tell us natural gas or propane when you order; the gas type is set at the factory and shown on the data plate.
- The broiler ships upright in a crate about 45.5" W x 83" H x 55" D and weighs 932 lbs; plan a liftgate, pallet jack and a clear path.
- Inspect the shipment before signing for it and note any damage on the bill. Report concealed damage to the carrier within 15 days.
- Have a licensed installer connect it and check it under a vented hood before the first service.
Questions buyers ask
Does it need electricity?
No. The 234R runs on gas alone, with constant-burning pilots.
Natural gas or propane?
Both: 220,000 BTU on natural gas, 180,000 BTU on propane. The gas type is set at the factory; tell us yours when ordering. Minimum supply pressure is 7" W.C. natural gas, 11" W.C. propane.
Does it need a flue?
It has a 2" flue collar, and Southbend recommends installing it under a vented hood. A stainless steel flue diverter is an option.
How close can it go to a wall?
6" at the sides and back from combustible construction, 0" from noncombustible (owner's manual). Install it under a vented hood and leave room in front to roll out the grids.
Can it go on casters?
Yes. Casters can replace the legs at additional cost.
What does the warranty cover?
Southbend covers defects in parts and labor for 1 year from purchase, up to 18 months from the factory sale, serviced by a Southbend Authorized Service Agency. Ceramic burner tiles, spark igniters and similar wear parts are limited to 90 days, and damage from improper installation or misuse is not covered.
