Hatco HCSSBX-4818 Remote Hot/Cold Built-In Simulated Stone Shelf, 48" x 18", Control Box Only (No Condenser), 120V
Description
A 48-inch flush-mount stone shelf that holds hot food or cold food from one surface, switching modes in as little as 30 minutes.
The Hatco HCSSBX-4818 is a patented remote hot/cold built-in shelf with a simulated stone top that sits flush with the countertop. One surface heats for hot food at lunch and chills for cold items at another daypart. The X version comes with the shelf, a loose remote control box, a loose TXV valve and a liquid line solenoid valve attached to the shelf, but no condensing unit: you connect it to a condensing unit supplied by others. Ash Gray Swanstone is standard; other stone and glass-ceramic tops are factory options.

Plan the condensing unit, refrigerant line route and a vertical wall spot for the control box before the countertop is cut.
Hot or cold on demand
The shelf changes from hot to cold or cold to hot in as little as 30 minutes, so one counter serves different dayparts.
Two digital controllers
The remote control box has a three-position power switch and separate HOT and COLD digital controllers. Hot setpoints run 65°F to 192°F; cold setpoints run 10°F to 50°F.
Your condensing unit
The X version has no condenser. Hatco notes it lets the shelf be cooled with other refrigerants; the liquid line solenoid valve comes attached to the shelf and the TXV ships loose.
Patented thermal break
A thermal break reduces condensation and temperature transfer to the countertop around the shelf.
Stone and glass tops
Ash Gray Swanstone is standard. Birch and Ice Swanstone, Dekton Rem, Domoos and Soke, or black or white glass-ceramic tops are options at time of purchase.
Delivery and setup
- Inspect the carton for damage before you sign, and note any damage on the delivery receipt.
- The shelf, temperature probe, TXV valve and control box come as separate pieces for field installation. Hatco ships the unit in a shipping frame; keep it in the frame until the counter and site are ready.
- Hatco states that all plumbing and electrical connections between the components and to the power supply are the responsibility of the owner and a qualified installer. The shelf must be connected to a condensing unit you supply.
- Brace the countertop as needed so it supports the shelf and its contents. Seal the shelf with NSF-approved silicone rated for -10°F to 250°F.
- Mount the control box on a vertical surface only; mounting it horizontally may let liquids collect.
Questions buyers ask
Does it come with a condensing unit?
No. The HCSSBX models include the shelf, remote control box, TXV valve and an attached liquid line solenoid valve, but the condensing unit is supplied by others. Hatco sells the HCSSBR version with a loose condensing unit.
How hot and how cold does it get?
The HOT controller sets from 65°F to 192°F (factory set at 180°F). The COLD controller sets from 10°F to 50°F (factory set at 25°F).
How long does it take to switch from hot to cold?
Hatco rates the change at as little as 30 minutes. After switching to cold there is a five-minute programmed delay before cooling starts.
What power does it need?
120V, 60 Hz, single phase: 815 W and 6.8 A for the HCSSBX-4818. The on-site supply connects to the terminal block in the control box.
What size counter opening do I cut?
48.375" W x 18.375" D with 0.375" radius corners. The control box needs a 13.125" x 5.625" wall cutout and 10" of depth.
What warranty does Hatco give?
Hatco lists a one-year parts and on-site labor warranty as standard, with 24/7 parts and service assistance in the U.S. and Canada.
