Who makes Southbend?
Southbend is a division of the Middleby Corporation, based at 1100 Old Honeycutt Road in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. According to Southbend, the company began in 1898 in South Bend, Indiana, as the Malleable Steel Range Manufacturing Company, founded by Jacob Woolverton and William Kizer, and grew from a single kitchen range into a full cooking line.

Ultimate, S-Series or Platinum: which Southbend range?
- S-Series (S36A, S60AA): the simpler restaurant range, 24" to 60", with open burners and optional griddle, charbroiler or raised griddle-broiler tops over standard, convection or space saver ovens. In our catalog an S-Series range is usually priced below the comparable Ultimate model.
- Ultimate (4361D, 4601DD): the most configurable restaurant range, 24" to 72", with a choice of non-clog, star/sauté or Pyromax burners and griddle, charbroiler or broiler tops on either side. H-models pair gas burners with an electric oven.
- Platinum heavy-duty sectional: 12" to 48" sections you line up into a battery, on a counter, cabinet or oven base. Choose it for hotels, institutions and kitchens that run every burner all day, or when you want induction, plancha or hot tops in the same line.
Decide the gas type, the total BTU your gas line and hood can handle, and the oven type first; we can check a configuration against your utilities.
Choosing Southbend steamers, kettles and skillets
Countertop and boilerless steamers (EZ, R, CSE, Sirius II) suit restaurants; boiler-based GCX, ECX and DCX steamers and Do-All pressure steamers suit schools, hospitals and commissaries.
- Water first: the warranty excludes failures caused by water quality, so test your water against Southbend's limits and plan a treatment system. EZ connectionless steamers need no water line.
- Kettles: pick the heat source you have: electric (KE), building steam (KD) or gas. Tilting kettles pour; stationary kettles need a draw-off valve. Size by your largest batch in gallons.
Southbend ENERGY STAR and certifications
- Steamers: the ENERGY STAR Certified Commercial Steam Cookers list includes 21 Southbend models, among them the Sirius II, ETP-10 Eco-Tech Plus, EZ18, EZ24 and CSE-4 steamers.
- Convection ovens: the ENERGY STAR Certified Commercial Ovens list shows 4 Southbend models (BES/17SC, BGS/13SC, GS/15SC and KLGS/17SC). Southbend's Energy Savings page lists Platinum ovens as ENERGY STAR; check the exact model before claiming a rebate.
- According to Southbend, its ventless electric convection ovens use an internal catalyst to break down most grease-laden vapors; local code decides whether you need a hood.

Is Southbend a good brand?
Southbend has built ranges since 1898, according to the company, and is part of Middleby. Its strengths are heavy-duty build, a wide choice of burner, top and base on every range, a full steam line from one maker, and a six-hour Service First response promise.
The trade-offs: the standard warranty is one year, wear items carry 90 days, lead times vary by configuration, and steam equipment needs water treatment to stay covered.
Southbend vs Vulcan and other heavy-duty brands
Buyers often compare Southbend with Vulcan and Blodgett. Compare model by model: the warranty and its exclusions, authorized service agencies near you, total BTU, oven type and lead time. Send us two or three models and we will compare them side by side.
